Biography
Sue Ninham spent her childhood and teenage years living in Sydney and Melbourne. Her family moved to Adelaide in 1982. In 1983 she completed a Bachelor of Visual Communication, majoring in Illustration at the University of South Australia.
Upon graduating she returned to Sydney and worked as a freelance designer and illustrator for advertising, book and magazine publishing. In 1997 she moved back to Adelaide with her husband and child. Her second child was born soon after.
In 2001 Sue made the decision to close her business and devote herself to painting.
Initially Sue’s paintings sprang from a need for creative freedom not found as a designer. Drawn to the 1950’s for her inspiration, having spent childhood summers in her grandparent’s house, memories of space-age splay-legged furniture, Parisian scened feature walls, fold away record players, patterned curtains and crazy paving imbued her work with a playful optimism.
Constantly evolving, her most recent work borrows less directly from these themes.
